Land, Sea and City
I love painting outdoors with existing light (plein air). Since 2021 I've been painting in the Pacific Northwest, some in my new home town, Port Townsend; some from our sailboat in British Columbia. Lately I've been painting larger and more complex scenes in my studio, based on plein air paintings and my own photos.
Earlier, our adventures by sailboat gave me gorgeous subject matter and down the Eastern seaboard, from Nova Scotia to the Caribbean. My paints hitched a ride to Europe with me, and I painted a lot in my long-time home town, New York City-- and still do, on my visits back.
For plein air, oil presents the greatest challenge (stuff to carry, potential mess). It is an unparalleled sensual pleasure outdoors. Lately, I've been exploring the flexibility of water-based media-- acrylic, watercolor, casein and colored pencil.
Below is a selection of the work I have available. On this page, hover over an image to see a caption that includes subject, size, medium and price. Click the image to see it enlarged. When you open one, you can scroll back and forth to see all the pictures with captions.
I also paint particular views on commission.
